Tutti Frutti Ananas was kicked off by Manuel di Vecchi Staraz of Vinyer de la Ruca, Joachim Roque of Domaine Carterole and Zé Tafé of La Cave des Nomades, who teamed up with a bunch of other winemakers to taste and create playful, approachable and affordable wines.
It is a project rather than a winery, initiated when these three winemakers took over a local cooperative in the town centre of Banyuls-sur-Mer, between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the shores of the Mediterranean. The cellar, Les 9 Caves, is a truly collaborative effort that welcomes old and new winemakers alike, who use the space to share not only vinification equipment but ideas and knowledge.
The grapes come mainly from Roussillon, from old bush vines growing in soil made up of schist, sand and quartz. Grapes are aged in large concrete tanks and each wine is named after a fruit in Catalan, Portuguese or Italian to reflect the winemaker's nationality.
