José Carvalho Moreira aka Zé Tafé is orginally from a small town outside of Porto. His Cave des Nomades is (was) a 3 hectare small winery in Banyuls. Zé's first vintage was in 2014 after purchasing a plot of Grenache found for him by his friend Manuel Di Vecchi Staraz. Since then he has become an integral part of Les 9 Caves in Banyuls.
Until his last vintage 2020, he had 12 parcels with mainly low yielding old vines of Grenache Noir, -Gris and -Blanc, Carignan Noir and -Gris, Mourvédre, Syrah, Merlot, Macabeo, Muscat Petit Grain and Chardonnay.
This diversity of grape varieties is complimented by various vinification vessels including stainless steel, old barrels and amphorae of all shapes and sizes. Every wine is unique and a micro-production of 300 to 1200 bottles. His wines (labels included) are influenced by Zé's artistic background. The labels are made out of cork (like he knows from Portugal) and are each individually designed by artist Katja Stroph.
This is the last vintage Zé made in Banylus since he moved on in a search of a new place … so take the (probably) last chance to get some of these characterful wines!
